Florida football's Jon Sumrall backs SEC stance amid player eligibility controversy

Florida football head coach Jon Sumrall has expressed support for the SEC's stance on player eligibility amid a controversy surrounding player eligibility. The SEC and other major conferences have taken an official stand against programs attempting to add players from professional teams amidst a legal battle involving LSU. Sumrall, speaking at a press conference on August 31, stated he would abide by the SEC's policy.

The issue stems from LSU, where 30 players are seeking eligibility through a court battle, as the NCAA altered rules to permit a fifth year of eligibility but excluded the Class of 2022. Among those players are Dae’Quan Wright, Zxavian Harris, and Jack Pyburn, all of whom are currently on NFL rosters. Despite the players being on NFL rosters, Sumrall maintained that if a player is an NFL player, they are an NFL player, and if a player is a college player, they are a college player.

Sumrall also emphasized that his roster had been finalized, and he was not looking to add players at this late stage. He noted that following the SEC's leadership on this matter is crucial, as adding a player late would violate the university's academic policy.
