Flash flood in Grand Canyon leaves 1 dead and several missing, National Park Service says

A flash flood at the Grand Canyon resulted in one death and left approximately fifteen people missing or unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids on the Colorado River on Sunday evening. The flooding occurred due to heavy rain during a monsoon, causing boulders to be pushed into the river and knocking out the sole water pipeline that serves tourists and residents.

The park service stated that the measures taken were crucial for ensuring safety and sustainability of water resources. Year-round residents have been asked to conserve water as overnight stays at lodges and hotels within the park will not be possible starting Monday due to the limited potable water supply. Popular tourist spots, such as Bright Angel Campground, the North Kaibab Trail, and Phantom Ranch, remained closed on Sunday.

The park service is seeking information about hikers or campers still unaccounted for, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety is assisting with additional evacuations. The flood was a significant setback for an ongoing effort to modernize the pipeline, serving 6 million visitors annually and approximately 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village.

The $208 million rehabilitation project, which began in 2023, was expected to be completed next year.
