EU intercepts suspected Russian shadow fleet ship in Mediterranean

On August 30, an oil tanker suspected to be part of a fleet aiding Russia's sanctions evasion was seized by an EU naval mission, according to top diplomat Kaja Kallas. The EU has increasingly taken a proactive stance in enforcing sanctions against Russia, demonstrating a willingness to board and seize suspected vessels. The oil tanker, MV Sun, was boarded in the Mediterranean under the Operation IRINI, which monitors arms and oil trafficking in the region.

Kallas revealed that this marked the sixth vessel intercepted by EU naval forces. This development follows the EU's recent authorization to intercept shadow fleet vessels not just in the Mediterranean Sea, but also in the Indian Ocean. Various European nations, including France, Sweden, Belgium, and the UK, have also boarded suspected shadow fleet vessels entering their territorial waters.

Illegal oil sales from shadow fleet ships are crucial for Russia's war in Ukraine, and the EU pledges to continue obstructing these sales. The bloc has sanctioned 673 ships of Russia's shadow fleet, with more expected to be sanctioned this autumn as they work on a new 22nd sanctions package with up to 1,500 potential listings. These actions against the shadow fleet will be discussed when EU defense ministers convene in Ireland on September 1.
