EQUITY, REPRESENTATION AND THE IDOMA QUESTION

Paul Ede Agbo speaks out in favor of inclusive governance and true belonging in Benue State. Idoma citizens increasingly feel politically and socially sidelined, even down to infrastructure, education, leadership and security. This perception of exclusion has grown under Governor Hyacinth Alia's leadership. It's not just about one appointment or decision, but the feeling that opportunities and attention are being unfairly skewed toward Tiv-speaking regions while Idoma communities are left with symbolic gestures.

Many Idoma people, who share a Catholic identity with Alia, expected more from their elected leader. Instead, they see his actions as treating their community with indifference and inconsistency with Christian values of fairness. Recent appointments to key committees have fueled concerns over representation. When government picks seem to favor one area, it undermines the idea of shared ownership and public trust.

This marginalization also affects academics - Idoma students are struggling to gain admission to competitive programs, even though they used to be well-represented in the past. With transparent data and independent checks, it's important to see if admissions truly follow merit and equity rules. Institutional leadership, including universities, is also being scrutinized for favoring Tiv individuals over Idoma talent, based on political influence rather than academic merit.

This disparity extends to road infrastructure - major projects are being built around Tiv areas, while Idoma communities get minor access roads that don't meet their broader needs. Roads matter as they connect communities to markets, hospitals, schools and economic opportunities. Unless development is transparent and proportional, resentment will grow.

Finally, the security situation in Idoma heartland is deeply troubling - recent killings have been met with weak reactions from the state. Decisive action, heartfelt condolences and preventive measures are needed to restore trust and ensure every life in Benue State is treated with equal urgency and respect.
