El Niño drought bites, Sarawak deploys 119 tankers to keep taps flowing

KUCHING, Aug 31 — The Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) and Sarawak Water are taking measures to ensure a consistent water supply in the state amid a prolonged dry spell caused by El Niño conditions. Gov. Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi highlighted that water levels at several raw water sources are declining, but major dams like Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin and Sika are at normal levels.

The strategy to combat this includes deploying 119 water tankers across Sarawak, with additional support from agency logistics and other agencies. Centralised water collection centres have also been set up at high-risk locations such as Sri Aman and Betong. Julaihi anticipates further strategic planning to strengthen the region's water security, including the potential development of new dams and water storage infrastructure.

Public should also conserve water, report supply issues to local authorities, and support conservation efforts, especially in areas with pressure on water sources.
