Disaster authority confirms Nepal flood death toll reached 903, while missing number 4,247

KATHMANDU, Aug 31 — The Nepalese disaster authority reported that a series of devastating floods near the border with China have resulted in at least 903 deaths, with the number of missing persons reaching a staggering 4,247, as rescue operations continue into a sixth day. Chinese state media had earlier reported 16 fatalities and 546 missing individuals in Tibet following the disaster on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll to 919 and missing persons to 4,793.

Among those missing are 592 foreigners and 933 workers on hydropower projects situated along the river that was devastated by the floodwaters, according to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The agency updated their figures in the morning, noting that 3,655 citizens are currently listed as missing, including 1,158 in Nuwakot district, a sharp increase from 115 reported on Sunday, and an additional 562 in Rasuwa district.

The missing also comprises 45 Nepali army soldiers, 38 police and armed police officers, and 19 customs and immigration officers. In India's Uttar Pradesh state, authorities have recovered 17 bodies believed to be flood victims from rivers originating in Nepal. However, these recoveries are not incorporated into the official death toll.
