Defense minister: Activation of Mecca Agreement to boost security, stability

On Monday, August 31, the Strategic Political and Defense Committee held its first meeting in Istanbul, coinciding with a defense pact between Israel and Greece. This development is reflective of broader shifts in the Middle East's geopolitical landscape.

Prior to the recent attacks in October 7, the region had been experiencing relative peace, and initiatives such as the Abraham Accords were underway, aiming to bring together Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain into a coalition. However, the dynamics have shifted, with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Syria, and others now forming closer ties.

The meeting in Istanbul was attended by foreign ministers, defense ministers, and chiefs of general staff from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The committee aims to enhance interoperability among their armed forces, promote defense industry cooperation, and combat terrorism collectively.

In Israel, the defense deal with Greece signifies the deepening of strategic relations and a commitment to strengthen mutual security in the face of regional challenges. Greece's Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, highlighted the significance of the new defense concept, the Shield of Achilles, which integrates various platforms through a network-centric architecture, enhancing its deterrence capabilities.

The Israeli Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of continued defense and strategic cooperation with Greece. Meanwhile, the US has increased its collaboration with Israel, including joint operations with US Central Command, potentially positioning Israel as a key base for US forces in the region.
