Data centre bigger than 100 football pitches faces 1,600 objections in Scotland

Residents of Auchtertool, a small Scottish village, are vehemently opposing plans to build what is being described as the world's second-largest data centre in their community. The proposed Cato data centre would span an area larger than 100 football pitches and be situated adjacent to the village, home to around 200 people.

Concerns over the project are numerous and varied. Locals fear the development could irreparably alter the character of their quiet rural community, citing worries over noise, light pollution, potential flooding, and environmental impact. More than 1,600 objections have been lodged against the plans, with protest banners appearing in homes, the village park, and on residents' cars.

For many, the debate extends beyond a mere infrastructure project; it's about preserving their preferred lifestyle. Fiona Stewart, a resident, expressed shock at the scale of the development, describing it as "bigger than the village and right next to it." She stressed that while she doesn't oppose data centres in principle, she finds it hard to justify locating one so close to a tiny village.

Stewart's concerns include light pollution, noise, and flood risk, particularly in areas that have previously experienced flooding during heavy rain. She urged the First Minister to pause the project and ensure proper regulation. Clare Williams, another resident, emphasized her choice to live in the area for its tranquility and expressed anger and worry over the potential impact on her peaceful life and property values.
