Cycling star Pogacar undergoes surgery after Vuelta crash

Tadej Pogacar, a renowned cyclist, underwent surgical intervention following a crash during the Vuelta a Espana. The incident occurred on Saturday, approximately 30 kilometers from the race's finish in Xeraco. Pogacar, who had been leading the race by a significant margin, suffered a concussion, a fractured collarbone, a displaced clavicle, a stable cervical fracture, and several abrasions.

The surgery, which Pogacar successfully completed, was initially delayed due to his concussion. UAE Team, his supporting organization, confirmed that the procedure went well. Pogacar will remain under hospital observation for a few days as part of his post-operative care. However, the team has not disclosed the length of his absence, suggesting that the Slovenian athlete may not be fit to defend his world title in Canada in late September.

Pogacar's crash happened during the eighth stage of the Vuelta, a stage anticipated to be transitional. At the beginning of the 21-day race, he led by a substantial three minutes and 50 seconds. Post-crash, Pogacar shared a light-hearted selfie from his hospital bed, accompanied by the Bee Gees' song "Stayin' Alive."
