COPEC urges government to pursue lasting solutions to rising fuel prices

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the government of Ghana to pursue comprehensive solutions rather than temporary measures to alleviate the burden of rising fuel prices on consumers. In an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News, COPEC Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah expressed concern that short-term relief efforts alone are insufficient to address Ghana's persistent petroleum price issues.

While welcoming the government's recent decision to extend a GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel, Mr. Amoah emphasized that the relief measure imposes a financial burden on the government and should be complemented by long-term strategies to tackle the root causes of fuel price volatility. Speaking on August 31, Mr. Amoah stated that while the government is taking steps to mitigate the impact on consumers, other critical areas requiring action have been neglected.

He urged for a more holistic approach to petroleum pricing, aiming to reduce consumer vulnerability to fluctuations in international fuel prices and other domestic factors influencing pump prices. Mr. Amoah stressed that the aim should be to move away from providing frequent temporary relief and instead implement stable measures that can safeguard consumers over the longer term.
