China’s factory activity contracts in August despite an uptick in export demand

China's manufacturing sector contracted slightly in August, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. Despite this decline, export demand remained strong, leading to a marginal improvement in the country's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) to 49.8, up from 49.2 in July. This index, which measures manufacturing activity on a scale of 0 to 100, above 50 indicating expansion and below 50 indicating contraction, suggests that the manufacturing sector has yet to fully recover.

However, numerous sub-indexes of the PMI showed signs of expansion. The production sub-index rose to 50.4, the new orders sub-index increased to 50.6, and new export orders improved to 50.1. This improvement in key areas suggests that the Chinese economy may be showing signs of recovery, driven by robust demand for exports. Notably, Chinese exports surged nearly 24% in July compared to the previous year, and more than 18% in the first seven months of the year, largely fueled by high-tech exports like semiconductors due to the artificial intelligence boom, and strong demand for electric vehicles, partly supported by higher energy costs due to the Iran conflict.
