China will stop Russia from using nukes, Finland's Stubb says
China is a "pretty good deterrence" against Russian escalation in its war on Ukraine, and Beijing will prevent Moscow from using nuclear weapons, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in an interview with German journalist Paul Ronzheimer, Politico reported on Aug. 31.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb claims that China will prevent Russia from using nuclear weapons in its war against Ukraine. Stubb expressed this assurance during a conversation with German journalist Paul Ronzheimer for Politico. According to Stubb, Finnish President Alexander Stubb received these assurances directly from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who visited Finland on July 5.
Stubb suggested that Russia's desire to keep Europeans anxious and uncertain about potential nuclear escalation or direct attacks on NATO benefits Russia. He advised European leaders to remain calm and vigilant, preparing for the worst to avoid it. Stubb does not believe Russia will attack NATO countries, asserting that conscription is Russia's only realistic path for escalation.
Bloomberg reported on August 26 that there are currently no indications Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, citing anonymous sources.
