Chargers stick with Trey Lance and two undrafted rookies on initial 53-man roster

The San Diego Chargers finalized their initial 53-man roster on Sunday evening, keeping quarterback Trey Lance as the starting QB2. Despite backup quarterback DJ Uiagalelei's better performance in Thursday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, Lance remained the team's second-string quarterback. The decision was based on Lance's familiarity with the team's offensive system, having previously played for the San Francisco 49ers alongside offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

The Chargers released punter and nine-year veteran JK Scott and running back Jaret Patterson, both of whom struggled during the preseason. Patterson couldn't compete with the already crowded running back room led by Omarion Hampton. Other notable players waived from the team include Greg Desrosiers Jr., Amar Johnson, wideout Dalevon Campbell, outside linebacker Kyle Kennard, and linebacker Junior Colson, a third-round pick in 2024.

Some "bubble" players, such as cornerback Rodney Shelley, did make the roster. The team traded cornerback Avery Smith to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick. Defensive lineman TeRah Ewards was sent to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick. Undrafted rookie Jacob Spomer, an offensive lineman, will remain with the Chargers due to his impressive performance during training camp.
