CDD calls for constitutional protection for OSP to shield anti-corruption fight

The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is advocating for constitutional protection for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to safeguard its independence and bolster the fight against political corruption, according to Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Programmes and Advocacy at CDD-Ghana. In an interview on Joy News’ PM Express, Asante suggested that the OSP should be elevated to the status of a constitutional body.

Asante explained that the anti-corruption office has been gradually building its institutional infrastructure and staffing since years, becoming truly operational around 2023 and 2024. While the OSP needs time to continue its work, it is crucial for the office to maintain public confidence by delivering results, he emphasized. The public has been closely monitoring the OSP’s performance and has resisted attacks and challenges to the institution, Asante noted.

He reiterated the need for the OSP to maintain public trust and deliver on its mandate, urging it to continue its work despite challenges. Asante rejected calls for a complete rebirth of the OSP, arguing for continuity in its institutional development. He stressed that the OSP is the appropriate framework for tackling political corruption, but its long-term survival requires stronger constitutional safeguards.

The Supreme Court's affirmation of the OSP's legality, according to Asante, provides the institution with the breathing space to further strengthen its operations.
