Canadiens Trading for Dylan Larkin Would Be Just Dumb

The notion of the Montreal Canadiens trading for Dylan Larkin appears utterly senseless, considering the current structure of the team. While there has been much discussion about this potential move, the primary reasoning behind it focuses on the Habs' need for another top-six forward and Larkin's role as a veteran leader to propel the team to success. This argument may seem plausible at first glance, but in truth, it is simply foolish.

The Canadiens are a young and emerging squad, boasting a 26-year-old 100-point Selke Trophy winner, and the league's premier young core that is poised to make a significant impact in the NHL. Players like Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson are only just beginning to showcase their abilities at the professional level. Consequently, a waning Dylan Larkin does not align with the Canadiens' objectives.

The team requires someone capable of keeping pace with their young talent. Upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that Larkin does not fit the bill for the high-performing Montreal team currently assembled by Kent Hughes.

Larkin is not the top-six scoring center that the Canadiens desire, nor is he the defensive powerhouse needed to thwart opposing teams. Instead, he is an expensive middle-six center who may not contribute much to the team's development at this stage. Moreover, the cost of $8.7 million for such a player is a significant issue. While Larkin can be an excellent depth piece for a deep team, it is clear that his role with Team USA at the 2026 Olympics indicates his place on a championship-caliber roster.

During those games, he played fourth-line minutes alongside some of the best players in the world - a reality check, not an insult. The Canadiens are not looking to acquire Larkin for their fourth line; he would likely become their second-line center, meaning Montreal would be paying a hefty salary for a player who lacks the offensive potential expected at that position.

At $8.7 million, Larkin must be more than just useful. The Canadiens require someone who can keep up with their young stars. Larkin does not appear to be that player anymore.
