Benzema ends brief stint with Al Hilal in Saudi league

Karim Benzema, a former Ballon d'Or winner and Real Madrid striker, has departed Al Hilal after a brief stint in the Saudi league. The French forward signed with Al Hilal in late January, replacing Real Madrid, in a season-long deal that would have continued until 2030. However, Benzema's time with the Saudi club lasted just under eight months.

Al Hilal Club Company expressed gratitude for Benzema's contributions, citing his professionalism, commitment, and leadership both on and off the pitch. The Moroccan international took to social media to thank the club for the opportunity. Benzema joined Al Hilal from Al Ittihad, leading the latter to a Saudi Pro League title in 2025.

The move to Al Hilal came after a contract dispute with Real Madrid. Despite having a contract until 2030, Benzema also acts as an ambassador for Saudi tourism and the 2034 World Cup. Benzema's decision to leave Al Hilal was announced the same day that the club signed England forward Ollie Watkins for £50 million ($68 million) from Aston Villa.

Spanish sports daily AS reported that Benzema had considered offers from the American MLS and other Saudi clubs, indicating that he had no immediate plans to retire. Al Hilal wished Benzema well for his future endeavors.
