Banjir di Nepal, Tibet ragut 804 nyawa, hampir 3,300 hilang

Heavy flooding and landslides in Nepal have claimed 804 lives and left nearly 3,300 people missing, according to the latest figures released by local authorities and media on Sunday. In Nepal, police reported discovering 788 bodies in the heavily affected areas, while 2,742 individuals remain unaccounted for, including numerous foreigners.

China's authorities, on the other hand, reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet. Search and rescue (SAR) operations are underway to locate the remaining 2,498 missing individuals, including 933 hydroelectric project workers, 589 foreigners, 127 Nepalis traveling with foreign tourists, and residents from disaster-stricken regions, according to local sources.

About 20,000 rescue personnel have rescued 8,186 people, while helicopters have been used to evacuate 279 hydroelectric workers and 227 foreigners to safety. Efforts to aid the victims continue with the delivery of food and basic necessities, medical teams, and financial aid by the government, as reported by Nepal News. The disaster struck the China-Nepal border region on Wednesday when a glacier collapsed, causing massive rivers of water and debris to flow through the Himalayan valleys, destroying villages and damaging major infrastructure.

SAR operations faced difficulties due to the terrain, steep mountains, and narrow gorges. Nepal requested legal assistance for the underwater rescue operation, technology for locating rescued survivors, forensic and DNA analysis, and equipment for handling found bodies. A team of 11 Indian experts arrived to assist the underwater rescue operation.
