‘Baba Yara and Accra Sports Stadium is not closed’- Yaw Ampofo Ankra

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has refuted reports claiming that Accra Sports Stadium has been shut down, reassuring the public, sport governing bodies and clients that the venue remains fully operational. NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah stated that while preparations and maintenance works are ongoing ahead of international matches, only the main pitch is affected and other sections of the stadium continue to operate.

He emphasized that there has been no official announcement of closure. The clarification follows rumors suggesting the stadium's shutdown as part of refurbishment efforts, which have caused concern, especially with Ghana set to begin its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign shortly. The Black Stars are scheduled to play their first match away against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, 2026, followed by a home fixture against The Gambia three days later.

Ghana qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous tournament. The NSA confirmed that Ghana's national team will use Accra Sports Stadium for home games, and the venue's readiness is crucial for the country's football authorities. The stadium has undergone multiple renovations since its opening, with ongoing upgrades to enhance safety, infrastructure and compliance with international standards.

Despite these improvements, worries about its current state have remained, particularly as Ghana prepares to host significant football events. The NSA maintains that the stadium is open, though the main playing pitch is temporarily closed for preparation. As Ghana's international football commitments approach, focus will continue on the stadium to ensure it meets required standards and serves as a suitable home venue for the Black Stars and other major sporting events.
