Author says Trump’s ‘Lake America’ rename driving hits to guide on ditching U.S. tech

Canadian author Paris Marx is seeing increased interest in his list of alternatives to American technology following President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America". Marx, who hosts the Tech Won’t Save Us podcast, maintains an email catalogue of tech services, mobile phones and other devices created by firms outside the United States.

Recently, Canadians have been checking out Marx's list after the U.S. government's renaming sparked tensions. Emily Osborne of the Canadian Shield Institute think tank urges Canada to continue reducing its reliance on U.S. tech, emphasizing the importance of digital sovereignty for Ottawa. Meanwhile, in Manitoba, foreign workers employed by the Western Star All Suites Hotel are owed nearly $138,000 in unpaid wages and administrative fees after the company dismissed their appeals.

The Manitoba Labour Board's decision highlights issues of long working hours, irregular payments, inadequate records and poor working conditions. In a separate incident, a 42-year-old man died after being Tasered by Winnipeg police early Sunday. Police responded to multiple 911 calls, some of which came from the man himself, who had been behaving erratically and removing his clothing.
