Analyzing KU football’s defense with season near, with D.K. McDonald

As KU football’s defense prepares for the upcoming season, defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald has outlined key areas where he hopes to see improvements. Communication among the safeties is one area he believes could see further development, although he noted that the linebackers have been performing well in this aspect. McDonald emphasized the importance of communication within the defensive unit, especially as situational decision-making will play a significant role in the team's success during the season.

In terms of turnovers, McDonald highlighted the need for greater awareness in red-zone situations, particularly in certain down-and-distance scenarios. The defense has done well in fall camp in forcing turnovers and stopping fourth downs, but he believes there is room for improvement in this area. Defensive tackles Jibriel Conde and Kevin Oatis, both redshirt juniors, have shown promising depth and versatility to the defense.

Head coach Roy Williams expressed confidence in the team's ability to rotate these players effectively.

McDonald also praised the linebackers, specifically mentioning Trey Lathan, Bam Crouch, Quincy Davis, and Jibreel Al-Amin for their impressive performances and leadership within the group. On the defensive end, redshirt junior David Santiago has made significant strides in his pass rush, now considered one of the best in the team's defensive unit.

Junior Leroy Harris III, senior Alex Bray, and redshirt sophomore Dakyus Brinkley round out the defensive end position, with Harris' potential to contribute significantly in 2026.

In the secondary, McDonald noted that the team has enjoyed a healthier safety group and the emergence of cornerback Trey Brown. Brown's dedication, both in camp and during the summer, has led to consistent improvement and a potential factor on special teams as well. Redshirt sophomore safety Khijohnn Cummings-Coleman, who has previous experience in the Big 12 Conference at Iowa State, could also provide a dynamic force as a nickel safety, helping both blitz and cover.
