AirPods With Cameras Could Bring Improved Spatial Audio Head Tracking

Apple's AirPods may soon feature cameras to enhance spatial audio head tracking on iPhones and other Apple devices, according to code discovered in macOS Tahoe 26.7 by member Mactracker on the MacRumors forums. Sensors in the current AirPods enable spatial audio head tracking, but cameras could provide even greater accuracy. The camera-equipped AirPods would identify the physical screen a user is watching content on, comparing the screen's direction with the estimated direction from the motion sensors in the AirPods.

This would enable the AirPods to determine whether the user is viewing a laptop, display, smartphone, tablet, or TV, potentially supporting multiple displays. Screen detection would occur in the background and pause when the user is in motion. Devices with Face ID already utilize Face ID sensors for head tracking, but if an AirPods with cameras is present, the AirPods would prioritize camera input over Face ID.

Code also hints at a server-based visual reasoning feature, further supporting rumors of Visual Intelligence support. Camera data from the AirPods would be sent to Apple's servers for Visual Intelligence requests. The macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, released in August, leaked a list of references to unreleased Apple products, including the AirPods with cameras. However, no launch date has been confirmed, with rumors suggesting a fall 2027 release.
