Airlink offers black-box data as the world reacts to ‘dangerous’ flypast

Airlink has offered black-box data from the two aircraft that executed a low flypast over DHL Stadium prior to Saturday's Springbok Test against the All Blacks. The data was provided to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) so they could independently review if the flypast adhered to the flight authorization. Airlink spokesperson Linden Birns stated the airline would refrain from further comment until SACAA completes its review.

Aviation analyst Guy Leitch noted the aircraft flew lower than necessary but deemed the flypast not reckless as it followed approved procedures within limits. The flyover, featuring Embraer E190 aircraft ZS-YAE and ZS-YDE, crossed the stadium ahead of kick-off and was broadcast live on TV, sparking international outrage due to concerns it could have crashed into the stadium roof.

The SACAA and Air Traffic Navigation Services had approved and supported the flight, which featured three senior captains per aircraft. Airlink, the official domestic airline for the tour, had staged a similar flypast before the first Test at Ellis Park a week earlier.
