Ad Hoc Committee on province’s killing crisis gets green light

The Western Cape Legislature has approved an amended motion establishing an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the causes of persistent killings and the effectiveness of government interventions. The ANC-sponsored motion was prompted by high murder rates in the province, with hundreds of people killed in recent months. ANC Chief Whip Ayanda Bans proposed a ten-member committee comprising all political parties to report within six months.

Bans emphasized that the Legislature must act, not just speak about the crisis, as people are being murdered at an alarming rate. The DA welcomed the motion, with Gillion Bosman proposing additional aspects such as investigating the powers and performance of various government entities. The Freedom Front Plus raised concerns about the urgency of the committee's actions, stating that the Minister of Police should already possess the necessary information.

After consultation, the Western Cape Legislature Speaker approved the amended motion, with Bans stating that the committee's establishment is crucial for confronting the violent crime crisis with seriousness and collective action.
