Abu Dhabi Police warn motorists to follow rules around school buses

As UAE students return to school this year, Abu Dhabi Police are emphasizing the importance of motorists adhering to school bus rules. Brig Gen Suhail Siyah Al Mazrouei, director of Traffic and Security Patrols, urged drivers to be extra vigilant near schools and bus stops, reduce speeds, and follow traffic signs. The fine for failing to stop for a school bus on activation is Dh1,000 and 10 black points.

Motorists must come to a complete stop when a school bus displays its side "stop" sign or flashing lights, maintain a distance of at least five metres, and never overtake a bus loading or unloading students. Speed limits are lower in school areas, and drivers should remain cautious, even on seemingly empty roads. Peak times for school bus activity are early mornings and afternoons, between 7am-8am and 1pm-3pm.

Students and parents must arrive early, wait at a safe distance from the curb, and only cross when signaled by the driver or attendant. Bus drivers and attendants must follow speed limits, conduct regular safety training, perform headcounts, and ensure the bus is in proper working order before each trip. Buses must be yellow with "School Bus" in English and Arabic, have an attendant, air conditioning, emergency exits, and GPS. Operators must maintain cleanliness, fire safety, and place fire extinguishers as required.
