8 toughest cuts from Chicago Bears' initial 53-man roster

The Chicago Bears have made eight significant roster cuts to finalize their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 regular season. Among the decisions, the Bears faced tough choices in several key positions. Left tackle Kiran Amegadjie was cut despite a competitive battle with Braxton Jones for the starting position. Wide receiver Maurice Alexander, who put up impressive numbers in the preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans, was not retained due to the Bears needing to limit their roster to six wide receivers.

Cornerback Terell Smith, who had been a key reserve since 2023, was released after suffering a season-ending injury in 2025. He could potentially make the practice squad if he clears waivers. Linebacker Jack Sanborn, once a starter for the Bears, was cut after a disappointing season. Although he received another shot from the Bears after his release by the Dallas Cowboys, he ultimately lost the starting role to Keyshaun Elliott.

Defensive linemen James Lynch and Marcus Davenport also faced uncertain futures. Lynch had a strong preseason performance, but with his eligibility for the waiver wire, he is now a free agent.
