731 Hyundai Avante Hybrid sedans recalled in Singapore due to risk of fire

Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced a recall of 731 Hyundai Avante Hybrid sedans due to a fire risk associated with an overheating transistor in the power control unit. The recall encompasses approximately 80% of the 917 Avante Hybrid cars registered in Singapore between 2024 and July 2026. These vehicles were manufactured between October 22, 2024, and January 7, 2026.

Upon overheating, the car may fail to start or enter a reduced-power "limp" mode, displaying a warning light on the driver's instrument cluster. In certain instances, the issue can lead to localised thermal damage, such as melting or combustion of components.

Komoco Motors, the distributor of the South Korean automobile, confirmed that the LTA approved the recall on August 27, and letters informing affected owners are in the process of being prepared. This recall is part of a larger effort involving over 54,000 cars in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US began investigating the issue in December 2024.

As of May 2026, there have been four reported incidents in the US linked to the fault, including one fire, with no crashes or injuries reported. According to the NHTSA, the problem will be resolved through a software update, enhancing the car's cooling capabilities when in operation.
