50,000-litre LPG tanker fire contained on Tema Motorway as Fire Service averts disaster

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully controlled a fire involving a 50,000-litre LPG tanker on the Accra Motorway, averting a potential disaster. Firefighters are still present at the scene while a recovery truck works to tow the tanker and restore traffic flow. ADO I Alex King Nartey reported from the scene, stating that the fire has been brought under control but warned motorists to expect significant delays.

The Accra-bound side of the motorway, from the Action Chapel area towards the Accra Mall, has been blocked, resulting in heavy traffic. Road Safety Management Services Limited has arrived with a towing vehicle to remove the tanker, allowing for free traffic flow once the tanker is safely removed. The incident could have had devastating consequences due to the significant volume of LPG involved and the proximity of communities and motorists to the scene.

ADO Nartey emphasized that an explosion involving such a large quantity of LPG could have caused widespread damage, potentially impacting areas far beyond the immediate scene. He praised the firefighters for responding despite the risks involved, stating their intervention prevented what could have been a major disaster. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and endure the heavy traffic while emergency teams complete the towing operation.
