3 friends went hiking in the Grand Canyon. 1 died, 2 are still missing.

On Saturday, flash floods swept through parts of the Grand Canyon, resulting in at least two fatalities and leaving roughly 15 people missing, according to family members. Dr. John Giusti, a 46-year-old chiropractor from Granbury, Texas, was among those killed. His family described him as a devoted father of three daughters, a gifted healer, and his ultimate hero.

Brent Rosenkranz, the second friend killed, was a lifelong martial artist with three sons who dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring young people. Lastly, Timothy Allen Smith, a husband and father of three, was also killed, loving the outdoors and enjoying hiking and camping with his family. The trio entered the Grand Canyon on Friday and hiked to the Bright Angel Campground, planning to spend two nights exploring trails near the bottom of the canyon.

They intended to go fishing before moving on to Havasupai Gardens. The intense rain, with nearly half a year's worth of precipitation in just two days, caused the Grand Canyon's South Rim to be hammered by heavy rain, hampering rescue efforts due to limited cellphone coverage and possible language barriers. Many of the missing were believed to be foreign tourists, making it difficult for their family members to contact authorities.

The remoteness of the terrain, with no roads inside the park, and the destruction of footbridges by the floods further complicated the rescue operation.
