Zebby Matthews finishes stellar August as Twins beat White Sox 5-1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Zebby Matthews pitched a career-high 8 1/3 innings, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning, as the Minnesota Twins edged the Chicago White Sox 5-1 on Sunday to avoid a sweep by the American League Central leaders. Josh Bell contributed two RBI singles and Luke Keaschall hit a homer for the Twins, who had lost four straight games and were nine games back in the Central and seven games behind the third wild card spot entering Sunday.

Byron Buxton was sidelined due to a lingering hip issue. Trevor Larnach's two-run double in the first inning gave Matthews a 3-0 lead, and he maintained the lead throughout the game. Matthews finished August with a 5-0 record, allowing just 10 earned runs over 31 innings. The Twins' star center fielder Byron Buxton was placed on the 10-day injured list.

The White Sox, now without their winning streak, face a three-game series against Houston starting Monday.
