What is the Detroit Lions’ toughest 53-man roster decision?

On Sunday, by 6 p.m. ET, all 32 NFL teams must trim their roster down to 53 players. For teams that carried 90 men for months, this means saying goodbye to 37 players—or 1,184 jobs. Nearly half of them (512) will secure a spot on a practice squad, while others may find a home on another team's 53-man roster. However, for the players who don't make the cut, it's a difficult reality to accept.

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell has expressed his dislike for this day, and I can only imagine how challenging it must be for general manager Brad Holmes.

As the roster gets deeper each year, the tough cut decisions become even more difficult. This brings us to the question of the day: What is the Lions' toughest decision for the 53-man roster?

My answer to this question is threefold. First, tight end Jackson Meeks. While Meeks has shown improvement as a receiving option and on special teams, his blocking continues to be a work in progress. Given his potential and tenacity, I believe he should have a place on the final 53-man roster, even if it means spending time on the practice squad to hone his skills.

Second, the defensive tackle room features a variety of talented players, from veterans to raw talent. It's a challenging decision to determine who makes the cut, but in my opinion, Chris Smith and Levi Onwuzurike should both have a shot at making the cut, as they have shown versatility and the ability to step in at any position along the defensive line.

Third, the offensive line is another area where tough decisions must be made. While the top eight players seem set, there may be room for players like Seth McLaughlin, who has shown promise by switching positions to center, and Mason Miller, who played well in the preseason finale despite having no experience at the position. Ultimately, these decisions will depend on the team's needs and values, but these are the three positions I believe present the most challenging roster decisions for the Lions in 2026.
