Dr. Ashraf Oqba, the Head of the Immunology Department at Ain Shams University, cautioned about the risks associated with untreated lupus in an interview with Extra News. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, affecting individuals of all ages, from children to adults.

While its effects are not limited to visible symptoms, it can significantly impact vital organs, including the kidneys and heart. Symptoms vary among patients, but common indicators include joint inflammation, skin rashes, notably on the face, severe fatigue, fever, and hair loss. Oqba stressed that if lupus progresses, it can affect internal organs, underscoring the importance of early detection and medical monitoring to minimize complications.

Diagnosing lupus is a multifaceted process, according to the expert. It does not hinge on a single definitive test. Instead, doctors consider a range of factors, including antibody tests, a clinical examination, and a review of the patient's medical history. The final diagnosis is made by the doctor, who evaluates all these elements collectively.

Oqba highlighted that genetic and hormonal factors contribute to the disease's development, explaining its higher prevalence among women. Additionally, certain medications and environmental factors can trigger symptoms in susceptible individuals. The head of the immunology department emphasized that lupus is a chronic disease that can be serious if left untreated, particularly if it impacts vital organs.
