Vandita Mishra writes: In the light of Jantar Mantar, Congress and BJP

The Jantar Mantar agitation has shed light on several issues that were previously overshadowed, particularly in relation to the BJP and the Congress parties. The BJP, now in its third term at the Centre, appears to be experiencing a sense of stagnation, with signs of restlessness even among its supporters. The party's third term has revealed various discontented factors, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where the Jantar Mantar protests gained momentum in June.

The twin challenges faced by the BJP are price rise and corruption, exacerbated by the ongoing war and the recent student movement. The government's emphasis on ideological projects rather than reforming systems and modernizing processes has come under scrutiny. Furthermore, concerns about the "bulldozer justice" policy and the "chanda chori" controversy at the Ram temple in Ayodhya have strained the BJP-RSS leadership. The party is now facing increased vulnerability due to growing resentments within its ranks.

On the opposing side, the Congress party seems to be gaining ground with Rahul Gandhi, who has effectively raised resonant issues and challenged the BJP during his cross-country yatras. However, Gandhi's lack of a strong political or governmental background appears to be hindering his full integration within the party. The Congress, out of power for a prolonged period, is burdened with inertia and factional infighting, which hampers its ability to respond effectively to the BJP's challenges.

The overall analysis suggests that both parties are grappling with internal issues and external pressures, with the BJP struggling to regain its momentum and the Congress struggling to find cohesion and relevance.
