Ukraine Reaches Winter Gas Reserve Target of 14.6B Cubic Meters Early

Ukraine has achieved its goal of accumulating 14.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas for the upcoming winter season a month earlier than anticipated. First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed the milestone on Telegram on August 28. The reserve is sufficient to meet baseline requirements for the 2026-2027 winter period.

Shmyhal praised the efforts of gas production companies, the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine, the state-owned Naftogaz, and the energy sector for their contributions to reaching the target ahead of schedule. This early accumulation of gas reserves is part of a broader national effort to fortify critical infrastructure and residential areas against possible Russian attacks.

As of August 21, approximately 100,000 residential buildings, 70% of the government's target, were prepared for the heating season. Additional measures included the preparation of 12,400 boiler houses and 11,700 kilometers of heating networks. The Ukrainian government has allocated nearly Hr. 6.8 billion ($152 million) towards repair works and infrastructure protection, with a focus on decentralizing the energy system, maintaining reserve capacity, and ensuring heating and water networks can function independently during potential blackouts.

These preparations have been a priority since Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi assumed office in mid-July. While energy staff pushes companies to expedite protective measures, local authorities are also preparing for worst-case scenarios, including the potential temporary relocation of residents facing prolonged heating outages.
