Trump pledges to refill US strategic reserves with Venezuelan oil

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that oil from a recent agreement with Venezuela will be used to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which has significantly decreased in recent years. This move comes as a response to global supply disruptions and rising fuel prices, according to a social media post from Trump. The process of replenishing the reserve is set to commence shortly, with the Venezuelan oil being described by Trump as a "Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States."

However, it remains uncertain how swiftly the Venezuela deal could provide oil for the reserve, and whether it would offer any immediate benefits to US motorists. The agreement, announced on Friday, aims to revive Venezuela's struggling oil industry. Yet, this endeavor will necessitate substantial investment and infrastructure improvements before production can notably increase.

As of August 21, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve held approximately 290 million barrels, nearing a 44-year low. This decline in stockpile occurred under both the Biden and Trump administrations, in reaction to global supply disruptions caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the conflict with Iran.
