Trapped For 10 Days, Fed By Farmer: Jackal Rescued From Well In MP’s Dhar

Bagh district in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a heartwarming rescue operation last week when a jackal was freed after being trapped in a farm well for approximately ten days. The incident took place near a water tank situated behind a boys' hostel in Longsari village, located within the Bagh forest range.

Laxman Aske, a local farmer and teacher, first spotted the distressed animal inside the well and attempted to rescue it with the assistance of nearby villagers. Aske continued to feed the frightened jackal for nearly ten days, but the creature remained trapped inside a motor room within the well, refusing to emerge.

Realizing the need for professional help, Aske informed the forest department. A rescue team swiftly arrived at the scene and lowered a cot into the well. Upon discovering the jackal's lack of movement, the rescuers entered the motor chamber, secured the animal's leg with a loop, and successfully pulled it out.

The rescued jackal was carefully restrained, thoroughly examined by medical personnel, and safely released back into its natural habitat. Forest officials emphasized that jackals primarily feed on meat but may occasionally consume plant-based food. Classified under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, jackals are afforded legal protection in India.

The rescue operation was spearheaded by forest guards Sunil Baghel, Devi Singh Chougad, and Vijayendra Pal Singh Ajnariya, as well as by Bharat Rawat, Sharad Solanki, Vesta Mandloi, Bal Singh, Vicky, and Naval Chauhan. Their quick action and commitment to saving the jackal's life prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
