The hotel that witnessed the making of Merdeka

The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, a 94-year-old landmark, has played a significant role in the country's history. Located opposite Kuala Lumpur's historic Moorish-style railway station, the hotel has been a hub for travelers and political discussions. During the Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1945, the hotel was seized and used as a transit camp and headquarters for the Japanese High Command.

After the war, the hotel became strategically close to the heart of Malaysia's political transformation, with key events such as Onn Jaafar's resignation as Umno president and Tunku Abdul Rahman's election taking place on its Roof Garden in 1951. Additionally, the hotel hosted Malaya's first multiracial national convention in 1953, which fostered political cooperation among different communities.

The hotel has catered to the city's affluent population, hosting British colonial officials and MCA founder Tan Cheng Lock. After closing in 1983, the property housed the National Art Gallery before being restored and reopening in 2012 as The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Despite modern upgrades, many original features remain, including the first hotel in Kuala Lumpur to have a hot water system.

The hotel's Colonial Café continues to serve traditional dishes and has been a platform for Malaysian jazz, with a grand piano still in use. Generations of international tourists have stayed in the hotel, including a family who visited because it was where their grandfather had once stayed. The Majestic Hotel remains a testament to Malaysia's political journey and the personal stories of those who have been part of its history.
