‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Passes ‘Avatar 2’ With $2.33 Billion at Global Box Office

Sony/Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has shattered the $2.33 billion mark at the global box office after its fifth weekend as the top-grossing film. This achievement puts it on track to surpass the worldwide earnings of the 2022 blockbuster “Avatar: The Way of Water.” In the U.S. and Canada alone, the Marvel flick has amassed $891 million, falling $45 million short of the unadjusted all-time domestic record of $936 million held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015.

For the month of August, “Brand New Day” holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing film in U.S. theaters, except for Aug. 21, which marked the opening day of “Insidious: Out of the Further.” The film edges past the seventh weekend of Universal’s “The Odyssey,” which currently holds the No. 2 spot. Ketchup/Warner Animation Group’s “Coyote vs. Acme” opened with an estimated $15.4 million from 3,573 locations.

Originally slated for release in 2023, the film saw a turnaround after being in potential jeopardy due to a tax break following its merger with Discovery. It was later acquired by Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million following strong social media support from “Looney Tunes” fans. Despite having a lower marketing budget and releasing later in the summer, early reviews are highly positive, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it scores of 94% among critics and 97% from audiences.

“Coyote vs. Acme” now joins the ranks of “The Iron Giant” and “The Lego Movie” as only the third Warner Bros.-produced animated film to achieve an A on CinemaScore. The upcoming Labor Day weekend may provide a boost to the film's momentum. “The Odyssey” rounds out the top three, earning $14.3 million domestically and $48.6 million internationally, taking its domestic total to $563.8 million and its global tally past $1.5 billion.

It has now surpassed the unadjusted $1.51 billion gross of “Furious 7” to become Universal’s second-highest grossing movie of all time and is now $120 million away from the studio record held by “Jurassic World.” In fourth place is “Insidious: Out of the Further,” which has pulled in $10.1 million domestically in its second weekend, marking a 60% drop from its opening.

The film has now grossed $43.6 million domestically and $110 million worldwide. Finally, topping the list at fifth is 20th Century’s post-apocalyptic drama “The Dog Stars,” starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin and directed by Ridley Scott. With a budget of $70 million, the film struggled at the box office with a weak opening weekend of just $8 million domestically and $19.8 million worldwide.
