Six months into the Iran war, Iranian Americans remain divided over what comes next

Six months after the US and Israel initiated military actions against Iran, the repercussions of the conflict are felt across the globe, including within the substantial Iranian population residing in the United States. The diaspora is comprised of individuals from various generations and backgrounds, all of whom have unique perspectives on the war's origins and outcomes.

The discord among Iranian Americans is a reflection of their divergent political ideologies, personal histories of exile, and differing visions for Iran's future. Initially, the conflict was viewed as a step towards toppling the Islamic Republic by activists like Arezo Rashidian, a monarchist aligned with Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi.

However, six months into the war, Rashidian's optimism has been replaced by disappointment, as she acknowledges that regime change has not yet materialized. Her family and contacts in Iran now share accounts of a growing climate of fear, with the secret police reportedly becoming more active. This shift in sentiment has led to a reluctance among some Iranians to openly discuss their political views or involvement in the protests, fearing repercussions from the regime.

The recent enforcement of Iran's mandatory hijab laws has also contributed to heightened tensions, with public admonishments and scrutiny of businesses for perceived violations. Despite her frustration, Rashidian remains committed to imposing stricter sanctions on Iran, hoping they will further isolate the regime. The recent announcement of additional economic sanctions by the US Treasury Secretary, though welcomed, has not met expectations, with Iran warning of retaliatory actions against regional oil producers and European nations.
