Saudi Food and Drug Authority launches first national food composition database

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has introduced the country's inaugural national food composition database, aimed at bolstering public health and aligning with the Vision 2030 objectives. Represented by the National Nutrition Committee, the Authority launched this initiative as part of the Health Transformation Program under Saudi Vision 2030. The primary goal of the database is to furnish precise, reliable, and current data on the nutritional content of foods and meals commonly eaten in Saudi Arabia.

The database encompasses comprehensive details on essential nutrients, including energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, adhering to stringent scientific methodologies and approved quality standards. It functions as a national benchmark to aid various sectors, such as health, nutrition, and research.

According to a statement from the Authority, the database will bolster the creation and refinement of evidence-based food and nutrition policies, facilitate scientific research and studies, and enhance nutritional and health awareness among the populace.

Furthermore, the database will assist the food industry in developing local products and augmenting their nutritional value. It also bolsters digital transformation efforts in the health and food sectors by enabling the creation of digital tools and indicators for evaluating dietary patterns and nutritional status. This initiative is part of broader national efforts to expand the food data system and foster evidence-based decision-making, with the aim of improving nutritional status and quality of life in line with Saudi Vision 2030's objectives.
