Russian-American Heads Trump's Planned Caucasus Trade Route

Russian-American businessman Konstantin Sokolov, 52, has become the focal point of a new US investment fund called TRIPP+ Enterprise Fund. The fund, backed by US President Donald Trump, was launched in mid-July 2025 and is expected to invest over $200 million in infrastructure projects across the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

The project, known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, aims to create a trade corridor connecting Azerbaijan to the autonomous exclave of Nakhchivan through Armenian territory. The initiative is part of a peace deal signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan in August 2025, following mediation by the United States. Sokolov, who emigrated to the US at age 21, was appointed to head the fund by the US State Department in July.

He previously acquired major stakes in Armenia's telecommunications and mining sectors, including Viva Armenia, the country's largest telecom provider, and the Teghut copper-molybdenum mine, which holds significant mineral reserves. While Western media has scrutinized Sokolov's business ventures and political affiliations, including his support for US President Donald Trump, the Armenian public remains largely unaware of his presence.

Some political analysts suggest that appointing Sokolov, a US citizen with Russian roots, could be a subtle gesture by Washington to ease Moscow's criticism of the project, while others view it as a pragmatic move due to his extensive knowledge of the former Soviet Union's business environment.
