Restoring the home of Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR: Stadium Merdeka, the site where Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence in 1957, has undergone a major restoration to closely replicate its appearance from that time. The stadium now features original timber-strip seats, colour scheme, and other elements that disappeared over the years, such as the scoreboard and washrooms.

The restoration, completed in 2024 after starting in 2017, aimed to balance preserving the stadium's historical significance while making it relevant for today's Kuala Lumpur residents. PNB Merdeka Ventures, the stadium's custodian, sought to restore the landmark to its 1957 form without turning it into a relic. Despite the complexity of working with a structure that has undergone numerous modifications over the decades, the team removed additional concrete terraces to return the stadium to its original capacity of 20,000.

The restoration project also incorporated modern accessibility features, such as a lift for visitors with disabilities, while carefully maintaining the stadium's historic character. Since reopening, the stadium has hosted over 200 events, including concerts, sporting events, and community gatherings. The restoration not only preserves the stadium's historical value but also allows the community to experience the same grounds where Malaysia gained independence, reinforcing the connection between heritage and local residents.
