Punjab AAP activist Gurpreet Singh Gopi shot dead near Ferozepur; cops suspect old dispute, elections as motive

Punjab AAP activist Gurpreet Singh Gopi was fatally shot near Ferozepur on Saturday night, according to police reports. Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu revealed that Gopi and his associate Harpreet were riding a motorcycle when assailants in a car pursued them and discharged gunfire. Both Gopi and Harpreet were injured; however, Gopi succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. Harpreet is currently receiving medical treatment.

The SSP suggested an old dispute between the two factions as the possible motive behind the attack. However, an election-related dispute has also gained prominence in the investigation. Friends of Gopi and Harpreet, such as Vicky Maini, the president of Mamdot’s Nagar Panchayat, were in a car following them. As the attackers aimed at that vehicle, the riders managed to escape unharmed.

Gopi’s sister-in-law recently won the Nagar Panchayat election from local ward number 5. The SSP confirmed that the primary suspects were identified and multiple police teams have been formed to apprehend them. The main accused, whose identity remains undisclosed, is believed to have a criminal background. Police teams are conducting thorough searches at various locations to trace the accused, while investigators are piecing together the sequence of events leading to Gopi's untimely demise.
