Tetonye·Egenam, Repeating Existing Gender Expectations? What Young People Say About ‘○○-ness’ 최근 한국 사회에서 ‘○○다움’이라는 표현이 종종 등장하고 있다. Recently, the expression ‘○○-ness’ has been frequently used in Korean society. 주로 MZ세대를 중심으로 ‘남자는 ○○해야 한다’, ‘여자는 ○○해야 한다’라는 식의 성별에 따른 역할과 특성을 강조하는 발언들이 온라인과 오프라인에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. Mostly centered on the MZ generation, statements emphasizing roles and characteristics according to gender, such as ‘men should be ○○’ and ‘women should be ○○,’ can be easily found online and offline. 이러한 발언들 가운데는 기존의 성별에 대한 사회적 기대를 답습하는 경우도 많은데, 과연 청년들이 말하는 ‘○○다움’이란 무엇일까. Among these statements, many are repetitions of existing social expectations of gender. So, what is ‘○○-ness’ that young people talk about? 지난 7월 29일부터 8월 2일까지 한국리서치 ‘여론 속의 여론’ 팀은 전국의 18세 이상 남녀 1,000명을 대상으로 ‘○○다움’에 대한 인식과 관련한 설문조사를 진행했다. From July 29 to August 2, the Korea Research team 'Public Opinion in Public Opinion' conducted a survey on perceptions related to ‘○○-ness’ with 1,000 men and women aged 18 and above nationwide. 조사 결과, 응답자의 절반가량(47%)이 ‘○○다움’이라는 표현이 ‘기존의 성별에 대한 사회적 기대’를 의미한다고 답했다. As a result of the survey, about half (47%) of the respondents answered that the expression ‘○○-ness’ means ‘existing social expectations of gender.’ ‘남성다움’, ‘여성다움’이라는 표현을 특정 성별에 대한 고정관념으로 인식하는 응답자는 각각 53%, 55%였다. 53% and 55% of respondents perceived the expressions ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ as stereotypes about specific genders, respectively. 반면, ‘○○다움’이 ‘나다운 것’을 의미한다고 답한 비율은 34%에 그쳤다. There were no significant differences in responses according to marital status or the presence of children. 이번 조사에서 눈에 띄는 점은 응답자의 10명 중 6명(58%)이 ‘○○다움’이라는 표현을 ‘전혀 사용하지 않는다’고 답했다는 것이다. A notable point in this survey was that 6 out of 10 respondents (58%) answered that they ‘never use’ the expression ‘○○-ness.’ 특히 18세부터 29세까지의 젊은 층에서는 10명 중 7명(69%)이 ‘○○다움’이라는 표현을 사용하지 않는다고 답했다. In particular, 7 out of 10 young people aged 18 to 29 (69%) said they do not use the expression ‘○○-ness.’ 이를 두고 한국리서치 측은 “‘○○다움’에 대한 인식은 세대별로 차이가 있지만, 대부분의 사람들이 이 표현을 사용하지 않는다는 점에서 ‘○○다움’이 사회적으로 통용되는 경향은 약해지고 있는 것 같다”고 분석했다. Regarding this, the Korea Research team analyzed, “Although perceptions of ‘○○-ness’ vary by generation, it seems that the tendency for ‘○○-ness’ to be socially used is weakening, in that most people do not use this expression.”
