Panicking Tech Execs Try to Pivot Message on AI Data Centers

Data centers have become a cause of widespread opposition in the United States, potentially costing the industry $130 billion in developments within the first three months of 2026. In response, tech executives are attempting to alter their messaging from AI-induced doomsday scenarios to more acceptable narratives for the general public.

However, their efforts are being scrutinized as they are broadcasting their attempts to deceive the public. Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, recently highlighted the need to devise a new narrative on data centers. This dilemma is influenced by the need to meet political and financial demands for public approval of data centers.

Tech tycoons are striving to directly communicate with the public, presenting optimistic visions of a shared future with humanity. For instance, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg published a lengthy article in August, arguing that AI will liberate people's time and enable them to achieve more than they could otherwise. However, this rhetoric appears hollow as evidenced by the lack of emphasis on worker welfare within the tech industry.

Some tech entrepreneurs are also fabricating utopian scenarios for AI capabilities that have not yet been realized. Matt Higgins, co-founder and CEO of venture capital firm RSE Ventures, suggests rebranding data centers as fraud prevention, clean-energy optimization, or precision agriculture centers. Nevertheless, the reality is that AI is exacerbating fraud and environmental damage while providing farmers with misleading information, leading to preventable crop failures. So, while the tech industry's messaging may seem more hopeful, it remains the same old deception.
