Oscar Jenkins gives first interview since 13-year sentence in Russia

Australian Oscar Jenkins has given his first interview since a Russian court sentenced him to 13 years in prison in May for acting as a mercenary in Ukraine's armed conflict. Jenkins, who appeared gaunt and shaved-headed, detailed his decision to volunteer for Ukraine and his time fighting with the Ukrainian forces in an interview conducted inside a prison in Luhansk, a region under Russian control.

Jenkins explained that he joined Ukrainian forces because he felt compelled to stand up against countries that invade others, especially when there is no justifiable reason, like in the case of Taiwan. He mentioned considering fighting in Myanmar or joining the Israeli Defense Force, but ultimately chose Ukraine due to its proximity and ease of access. Jenkins, who had no prior military experience, described a month of training to become a machine gunner for the Ukrainian forces.

During his time with the Ukrainian army, Jenkins participated in several missions, including one where he was captured. He was approached by soldiers who asked if he needed assistance, and after confirming his identity as a Ukrainian soldier, he was taken prisoner. Jenkins was later tried in Luhansk and sentenced to 13 years in a maximum security prison, with the Australian government labeling the trial as a "sham."
