Nepal flood survivors return to ruins to salvage memories

DHUNGE, NEPAL - In the aftermath of a catastrophic flood, villagers have begun returning to their destroyed villages, desperately searching for any remaining belongings and documents. Shanti Lamichhane, a survivor from the village of Dhunge, sat amidst the debris, determined to retrieve personal items. She understood that these possessions held not just material value, but also the memories and emotions tied to her past life.

The village, once home to approximately 150 families, was now a mangled landscape, reduced to a swamp, with a foul odor permeating the air. The disaster, triggered by a glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border, swept through the region, leaving behind a trail of destruction. As of Sunday, the death toll had risen to nearly 3,000, with 691 bodies recovered.

Many survivors, like Hari Prasad Rimal, returned to salvage treasured possessions, such as photographs and jewelry. Others, like Santosh Adhikari, returned to the site of his destroyed home, hoping to find any remnants. Despite the personal loss, the primary concern remained the safety of their families. Rimal remarked that his family's survival was a silver lining in the otherwise grim situation.
