NatPower Marine ready to support delivery of the UK’s net zero ports ambitions

NatPower Marine has expressed its enthusiasm over the Government's response to the Net Zero Ports call for evidence. The findings underscore the pivotal role ports will assume in the shift towards maritime decarbonisation. This includes the necessity for shore power, vessel charging, electric port equipment, and cleaner fuels, all of which demand novel infrastructure and improved coordination among ports, shipping operators, electricity networks, and investors.

The Government's pledge to champion ports' energy requirements through strategic energy planning and grid connection reform is particularly welcomed by NatPower Marine. The company asserts that the crucial aspect lies in connecting infrastructure with real demand from shipping operators. If this can be accomplished along specific routes, private capital can aid in transforming plans into operational projects. NatPower Marine is keen to collaborate with the Government, ports, and shipping operators to pinpoint sites for early projects that can demonstrate the viability of green maritime corridors.

The next phase could involve focusing on a select few ports and shipping routes that have committed customer demand and a feasible route to securing clean power. This approach would enable the Government and industry to test practical delivery models, build confidence among shipping operators, and illustrate how green maritime corridors function in practice. It would also ensure that investment is directed towards projects with a clear path to realization.

NatPower Marine is actively developing an international network of ship-charging facilities for electric propulsion and shore power. This network encompasses project investment, clean energy supply, infrastructure development, and long-term operation. The company anticipates working alongside the Government and the wider maritime sector to convert the evidence obtained through the call for evidence into tangible projects at UK ports.
