'Major Self-Redevelopment Campaign For Mumbai Housing Societies To Be Launched Soon,' Says MLA Pravin Darekar

Mumbai's housing societies are set to launch a comprehensive self-redevelopment campaign soon, according to MLA Pravin Darekar. The BJP group leader and chairman of the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank made the announcement during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Anant Tapasya Cooperative Housing Society in Borivali West. Darekar emphasized that self-redevelopment initiatives are already gaining traction in the city and urged more societies to undertake redevelopment independently.

Housing and cooperative sectors are among his primary areas of focus. As chairman of the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank, Darekar initiated a policy providing loans to housing societies for self-redevelopment. He informed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the initiative, leading the state government to support the cause with 18 decisions.

So far, 1,600 proposals have been received, with loans sanctioned to 46 societies. Nearly 21-22 buildings have been completed, enabling middle-class families to move into larger homes.

During a visit by a delegation of IAS officers from Delhi, Mumbai showcased its self-redevelopment model, covering aspects like construction, funds availability, and repayment mechanisms. The aim was to explore how Maharashtra's model could be implemented nationwide. Darekar also highlighted the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank's ongoing contributions to Mumbai's development, including the establishment of a housing federation sub-centre at Aarey for suburban residents and the construction of a 12-storey Sahakar Bhavan in Sion equipped with modern facilities.

Additionally, the Namo Sahakar Taxi scheme, where benefits directly reach taxi drivers, is in the pipeline.
