Lee Yong‑joo, ‘Blue Tower’ actor, dies suddenly of cardiac arrest at 40

Seoul, August 30 — South Korean actor Lee Yong‑joo, renowned for his comedic portrayal of a soldier in the popular tvN series Blue Tower, has passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest at the age of 40, according to OSEN. A close friend shared the tragic news on social media on August 29, expressing deep regret and offering condolences.

Lee’s funeral is scheduled to take place at Bundang Jesaeng Hospital Funeral Hall, with the departure ceremony set for August 31. He will be buried at the Seongnam City Funeral Culture Centre.

The sudden demise has brought renewed attention to Lee’s previously disclosed health concerns. In February, he candidly discussed his heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, on Lee Jong‑hyuk’s YouTube channel, revealing that he had been excused from military service due to his medical issues. Despite being unfit for enlistment, Lee’s endearing performance in Blue Tower became a standout role in his career, garnering a devoted fanbase.

Furthermore, Lee recently shared his efforts to rebuild his life after a failed business venture in Busan. He returned to Seoul, where he operates a modest travel agency near Moran Market in Seongnam, expressing his resolve to start anew.

Following his breakthrough in 2004 with the film Ahn Jung‑geun, Lee appeared in various acclaimed dramas, including MBC’s Hello, Francesca, Palace, and tvN’s Uncontrollably Fond. However, it was Blue Tower that truly solidified his reputation, with viewers cherishing his unique comedic flair. Lee’s co-star Baek Bong-gi mourned his loss on Instagram, expressing regret for not having spent more time with him, apologizing profusely for not being able to call or see him more often.
