Langkawi ferry operators urge urgent dredging of Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis lanes

Alor Setar - Ferry operators in Langkawi have called on the federal government to speed up dredging efforts in the shipping lanes at Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis due to silt deposits that are compromising safety. Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Norhafiz Abdul Wahid, operations manager of Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd, explained that the deeper shipping lanes not only pose a threat to passenger ferry operations but can also lead to delays and travel disruptions.

Ferry services are vital for transporting tourists to Langkawi and contribute significantly to the nation's tourism sector. Based on historical data, these ferry services can accommodate up to 25,000 tourists daily during peak season. If dredging is not implemented promptly, the situation could jeopardize the smooth operation of ferry services, particularly around major events like the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) scheduled for next year.

To ensure safety and smooth ferry operations while handling increased passenger numbers, Norhafiz emphasized the necessity of comprehensive and regular dredging. He mentioned that between August 27 and September 6, 176 regular ferry trips and an additional 66 trips would be conducted to cater to school holiday and National Day traffic surges.

Approximately 90,000 passengers are anticipated to use the two primary routes - Langkawi-Kuala Perlis-Langkawi and Langkawi-Kuala Kedah-Langkawi. So far, 86,978 tickets have been sold via online platforms, counters, and reservations. Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd assured readiness for ferry operations throughout the school holiday and National Day seasons.
